About this site

Energy Bill Guide is an independent reference site for Australian households. It exists because free midday electricity arrived in July 2026 with a lot of headlines and very little arithmetic. Whether a free-power plan saves you money depends on the rates it charges for the other twenty-one hours, and almost nobody puts those side by side.

What we do and do not claim

We are not an energy retailer, a broker or a government agency. We do not sell electricity and we do not compare every plan in the market. We compile published scheme rules, reference prices and retailer plan terms, record where each one came from and when we checked it, and build tools that do the sums for your own usage.

For a complete list of plans at your address, the government runs free comparators: Energy Made Easy and Victorian Energy Compare. We link them on every comparison page and we would rather you used them than switched blind.

Where the numbers come from

  • Scheme rules come from the Australian Energy Regulator, the relevant government department and the state regulator, linked at the foot of each page.
  • Reference prices (the Default Market Offer and the Victorian Default Offer) come from the final determinations published by the AER and the Essential Services Commission.
  • Retailer rates come from the retailer's own plan page or its Basic Plan Information Document, or from Energy Made Easy. Rates differ by network area, so every row names the area it applies to. If we could not source a figure, the table says "not published".
  • Calculator assumptions such as how much of a typical home's usage falls in the free window are stated on the calculator page, and you can change every one of them.

How we make money

Some switching services pay a flat fee when a reader switches through a link. Nobody pays us yet. The full list of who could, and what they pay, is on how we make money.

General information, not advice

Nothing here is financial advice or a recommendation about your circumstances. Plan terms change, sometimes monthly. Check the current terms with the retailer, including the Basic Plan Information Document, before you switch.

Found an error?

Rates move and retailers rename plans. If a figure here is wrong or out of date, tell us which page and what the current figure is, with a link if you have one, at hello@energybillguide.com.au. We will check it and update the date.
