"Against the cap" compares each rate with the AER (or Victorian) maximum; differences under 0.02c are
rounding. Endeavour, Essential Energy and the other Victorian zones are not yet in our register.
Headline finding. Origin's Solar Sharer is the regulated price with a small feed-in
tariff on top. The Ausgrid peak rate is 0.03c under the cap, which is
rounding, not a discount. Pick Origin for this plan only if you already like Origin or want its feed-in;
the real decision is whether the Solar Sharer beats your current plan.
Reading the plan line by line
Free period. Origin labels it a "3-hour free usage period", 11am-2pm all year, all week (12pm-3pm in SA), at 0c/kWh.
The cap. Origin's records do not encode a daily cap for Energex or SA Power Networks. The regulated cap is 24 kWh. For Ausgrid we show 24 kWh, taken from a SolarQuotes comparison that also reported 27.6c above the cap; it is not in Origin's own record.
Supply. 176.41c a day in Sydney, the same as the cap (Origin's standard time-of-use plan: 176.33c).
Outside the window. Higher than Origin's standard plan, by design. Origin's Ausgrid standing time-of-use plan charges 60.14c peak and 24.04c off-peak; the Solar Sharer charges 63.69c and 27.56c.
Meter. A smart or digital meter is required. Origin's Victorian record says it can help arrange a meter upgrade.
Premium feed-in. Origin's SA record also lists the closed 44c legacy feed-in scheme, which new solar customers cannot join.
Feed-in tariff

Many retailers pay 0c on these plans, so Origin's is one of the better ones, but midday exports earn
little anywhere now. See feed-in tariffs.

Common questions
Does Origin offer the Solar Sharer Offer?
Yes. "Origin Standing Solar Sharer" is in the government plan feed for Ausgrid, Energex and SA Power Networks, and "Origin Standing Midday Power Saver" for Victoria (CitiPower in our data). Free hours are 11am-2pm, or 12pm-3pm in South Australia, and the rates sit on the regulated maximums.
What feed-in tariff does Origin pay on its Solar Sharer plan?
In the government feed: Ausgrid 3c, CitiPower 1c, Energex 3c, SA Power Networks 2c/kWh. That is at the higher end for these plans, many of which pay 0c, but well below what some market plans pay. Feed-in tariffs change, so check Origin's current fact sheet.
Is Origin's Solar Sharer cheaper than other retailers'?
Not in any way that matters. Its supply charges and usage rates sit on the regulated maximums, within a few hundredths of a cent. The only real difference between retailers is the feed-in tariff. The bigger question is whether the plan beats your current one, which the calculator answers.
Does Origin have a market plan with free power?
We found no Origin residential market electricity plan with "free" in its name when we scanned all of Origin's plans in the government feed on 17 October 2026. Some other retailers sell market plans with free periods; see free electricity.
